The Illustrator’s Corner #1 | Frannerd

Tagged: ,

esteeSo here’s something a lot different than what we’re used to seeing on, but I hope you really enjoy it! The idea of The Illustrator’s Corner came to me after receiving an email from Fran. She was being really sweet and discussing YouTube etc. and at the end of it she said, “If you need anything (especially on illustrations matters, oh crap! I forgot to mention that I’m an illustrator) don’t hesitate to ask me.” I took a look at her online portfolio and adored her work. I didn’t need any illustrations done, but I thought it might be interesting to feature illustrators every now and then in case any of YOU needed illustrators.
esteesketches02esteesketches esteeprocessWe kind of went back and forth via email; I told her how much I envied her artistic talent, she told me she would love to do some drawings! It was a win, win situation because I just love looking at them! In her spare time she got down to business and came back to me with some sketches-I was flabbergasted and thrilled with them! Considering I’m not a skilled artist, I found it so interesting to see the behind-the-scenes work and the process an illustrator goes through to get to the final product. She captured everything so perfectly and I love that she added in my freckles! BIG thank you to Fran for taking the time to work with me on this post. esteeprocess02Screen Shot 2014-01-15 at 18.09.53Here’s a bit of Fran’s story:

“My name is Fran, and I’m 26 years old. I was born and raised in Chile, that really long loong country in South America, next to the lovely fellows in Argentina. A few months ago, my husband Ed, my two fat cats Hamburger and Cereal and I, decided to be all crazy and move to Berlin, Germany, powered by the idea of developing our careers and pursuing our dreams.
I’ve always love to draw. I can’t imagine a time where I haven’t had a sharp pencil in my hand and a piece of paper in the other. I was raised watching Sailor Moon, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network’s shows and I loved creating my own super heroes stories or drawing my own comic books.
For some reason I decided to study Graphic Design and at some point of the third year (doing an internship in a Chilean newspaper and illustrating some of the news and articles) I knew that I wanted to be illustrator for the rest of my life but I didn’t know how. I couldn’t quit the career (because my family couldn’t afford to pay for another one) and I couldn’t afford illustration courses myself. So I decided to stay in Graphic Design. But when the classes were over, I ran to the library and I would spend hours and hours looking at illustrations books, blogs and all the information I could hold in my head about techniques, famous illustrators, my favorite styles and all that stuff. So, by day I was a graphic designer student but by night I juggled between homework and was an illustrator enthusiast.By the end of that year I was doing my first illustration commissions and learning a lot about the illustration media in Chile. All the rest was amazing: I started blogging a lot and people started to visit my posts daily and I started to became noticed in the illustration world in Chile, which was amazing! Right now I’m trying to do the same here in Berlin, I hope I can figure something out.
I love to draw, but I also love to cook sweet things, like cookies, sweet breads, kuchen and tarts. I love feeding my friends with baked stuff and right now I miss that so much! I love to read, take long walks, watch TV series and movies and a few months ago I discovered that I enjoy making youtube videos.”-Fran

This is fantastic! I have such respect for visual artists. They quite literally shape the way that people see the world through their illustrations, which is just so cool. That’s a lot of power!
