Cruelty Free Beauty Products #1

Tagged: ,

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAToday I thought I’d focus solely on cruelty-free beauty products, some of which are even vegan products! I’m not vegan, but I have plenty of vegan friends who are also makeup addicts. Let’s get started…

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap ‘Peppermint’-£8.49
Dr. Bronner’s Soap is a very multi-purpose product, which can be used for the hair, body etc. and it’s very effective to wash makeup brushes! I love the peppermint scent because it clears my mind as well as my makeup brushes (they have lots of scents). It’s not an aggressive soap, doesn’t dry your skin out and lathers like nothing else! If you’re curious about this brand be sure to watch the documentary called Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soapbox. Visit

Pai Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser-£25.00
Pai is one of my favourite skincare brands because their products are so gentle on the skin. I adore this cleanser because I know I can count on it to soothe and hydrate my skin and it doesn’t have any harsh chemicals in it. Pai is an organic brand based in London, which uses the cleanest plant based skincare they can for people with sensitive skin. Visit

Eco-Tools Bamboo Bronzer Brush-£9.99
Eco-Tools brushes are fantastic brushes at reasonable prices. The handles are made from bamboo, the bristles are synthetic and the company is cruelty-free/eco conscious. I’d highly recommend these brushes if you’re looking for something new! Visit

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush ‘Flush’-$31.00
Tarte has a huge selection of vegan-friendly products (see here), but I don’t believe the blushes fall into that category. Nevertheless, all of Tarte’s products are cruelty free and are some of my favourites in my makeup stash. Visit

Josie Maran Coconut Watercolour Cheek Gelée ‘Poppy Paradise’-$29.00
Josie Maran is heavily involved in various charities & ethical campaigns and her beauty products reflect that. I’ve loved every one of her products that I’ve tried and this blush is definitely a stand out product. Read my review on this product here. Visit

I really hope you found this post useful if you’re vegan or strive to use more ethically sourced beauty products. What are your favourite beauty products or brands that are cruelty free?

Essie I LOVE YOU FOR THIS!!!! I blog about cruelty-free beauty so this is fantastic and much appreciated, since the transition can be really intimidating.

I’d recommend RMS Beauty, Hourglass, Physician’s Formula as my favorites but second Wet n Wild, NYX, and Jordana as amazing drugstore options. If anyone is interested in going the more natural route, Ilia and Gabriel/Zuzu Luxe do great lipsticks.

Someone below has mentioned this, but I’ll just reiterate that Real Techniques, Sonia Kashuk, Too Faced, and Bdellium are cruelty-free and use synthetic bristles (meaning the brush hairs are not harvested from animals).

Thank you thank you thank you! I’ve been looking for a list of CF product and reviews on them! Love ya, Esteé!

  • Daphne Shen

This is an awesome post; I often forget that make up can be tested on animals! I will deffo start looking more at where my make up comes from!

  • Angie Wilson

I have been looking for more cruelty free brands these days. I recently picked up a cleanser by Skyn Iceland and they’re a cruelty free brand too that I think I’m going to have to try more products from. So far, the cleansing is fantastic!

I love Eco-tools brushes. I have that same brush and the powder brush, they are awesome! :) x

  • Jessa

The tart blushes are amazing, and only $26 USD at Sephora =)

  • Cassie

This is such a good idea! I’ve never thought about this before, but now I’m going to think about using products that are cruelty free.

  • Amanda Auchter

LUSH and e.l.f. are great cruelty free/vegan brands!

  • Megan

I love that you are doing a cruelty free series! I am in the works of going cruelty free for my beauty products and I follow a vegan diet! Tarte is definitely one of the best CF makeup brands, I have been trying out It Cosmetics CC+ cream which is CF and I have been loving it. It’s definitely right up your alley (medium coverage, lightweight feel and has a light enough shade for us porcelain gals)!

  • Chelsee

Surprised there weren’t any products from The Body Shop in this! I used to work for them, and know that most of their products are 100% vegetarian and cruelty-free (:

    • Monnie M

The Body Shop is owned by L’Oreal so even though The Body Shop doesn’t test on animals the money goes to a company that does!

      • Chelsee

        oo good point! =/

  • SophsChoices

Cruelty-free is the only way to be beautiful. Love this post, thanks Essie. The eco-tools brushes are great.

I’ve just written about my drugstore favourites over on

Come over and check it out.

i wish we got tarte in the uk…have heard soo much about the 24hr amazonian clay blushes…

  • PeonyandPeach

I love ecotools too! Is the body shop cruelty free? If so then them!

  • MissBrunzy

Anyone living in the US know where to find Dr. Bronners Soap?

    • Heather

Do you live near a Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods (or other natural store), or a drugstore that carries natural products. I see it at Trader Joe’s all the time but I know they’re not everywhere. Use there store locator and you should be able to find it.

      • MissBrunzy

Heather, there is both right near my work. Thank-you tons!!! :D

  • GlossyFinds

Love the Tarte amazonian blush <3!!!

  • Robyn Bell

This sounds great! Naively i hadn’t given much though to animal testing on beauty products until a few weeks back when i saw Lush’s display in their london store, great post x

  • Harriet

Oh I love Tarte blushes *swoon* wish they would hurry up and bring the whole line to the UK! Definitely want to try the Josie Maran cheek gelee as I have heard so many good things about them!

  • Catherine

So glad that all your followers/readers will see this post. You’re helping spread awareness about cruelty-free products and I KNOW it will influence some people’s purchasing decisions.Because I’ve only purchased cruelty-free for years and my blog shows only cruelty-free brands, I’m pretty close to impossible for me to pick favorites. I’m a big fan of four of the five here – I haven’t had a chance to check out Pia. Thank you from the bottom of my heart (and on behalf of lab animals everywhere) for writing this!

    • mysteries1984

What about cruelty-free brands owned by non-cruelty free parents?

  • Jasmine

I hope you do a blog post in the future on how to wear that beautiful purple blush! I have never seen a blush that color, and I’m curious on how to pull it off!

  • Eleri Roberts

Eco tools are great :) Really wanting to get into Pai too, pleased to hear they’re cruelty free! xx

although i don’t use exclusively cruelty free makeup and skincare brands, i do really like it when brands make a point of being cruelty free and using natural/organic ingredients. i’m really glad to hear brand like tarte and josie maran are cruelty free though because i didn’t realise until reading this post.

Thank you for the post. I’m not Vegan but I think animal testing is unnecessarily cruel, so I’ve decided to buy cruelty free products only. Kiko Cosmetics is a cruelty free company and their products are pretty inexpensive. In my opinion, some of them are really nice.

  • Leonie Hollins

I found buying truly cruelty free products a complete nightmare. Particularly as I didn’t want to buy anything that was affiliated with a company that tests like Burt’s Bees or Bodyshop. For those of you in the UK have a look at all products are completely cruelty free. I’ve since come across PHB makeup which is relatively new, I think only been around a couple of years. It’s absolutely brilliant and is also vegan. Not sure if you can get it in the USA but definitely something to look out for :-) Love your cruelty free post, fantastic that people are talking more about it.

  • Anna Bohlin

Gotta say, even tho this post showed me products I’ve never tried or even knew were cruelty free, I’m slightly disappointed that your recommendations left out both Lush and TBS, the classics are everything to me!

  • Heather

Just a heads up that Tarte sold out to KOSE. KOSE is a company that DOES test on animals. Though Tarte claims they will continue to remain a cruelty-free line, when you buy from them, money is ultimately going to their parent company KOSE. Urban Decay and countless others ALL have parent companies who still conduct animal testing.

I feel like the bigger parent companies (Estee Lauder, KOSE, etc.) are buying up the smaller cruelty-free lines so they reap the benefits of both markets. It’s really not forcing them to change their practices at all.

  • Eva Vega

yayy! this makes me happy to follow you :)
you should also look into the ingredients in the products themselves, idk if it actually means anything but I am OCD about what goes on my face.
this is the website if your interested!
