Is Covergirl Cruelty-Free And Vegan?

Covergirl is a drugstore brand known for their mascaras and complexion products! They aren’t the most popular drugstore brand nor do they have the largest offering. Their most recent launch, the Clean Fresh line offered all vegan, cruelty-free, paraben and phthalates free products. A first for the drugstore! It looks like they have good things to come and they’re definitely a brand that should be on your radar.

Is Covergirl Cruelty-Free?

Yes, Covergirl is cruelty-free and they are the largest brand to have a Leaping Bunny Certification! This means they don’t test on animals, commission others to, sell in mainland China or use ingredients from suppliers that test on animals. Covergirl is a growing drugstore brand that’s raising the bar for cruelty-free and vegan makeup. With the introduction of their Leaping Bunny certification, we can’t wait to see what they have in store next!

Here is their statement

“At COVERGIRL, we believe that you shouldn’t have to choose between the beauty products you love and the values you believe in. As the biggest makeup brand* to achieve Leaping Bunny certification in partnership with Cruelty Free International, we’re committed to getting affordable, cruelty free and ethical makeup into the hands of anyone who wants it.”

“The Leaping Bunny approval from Cruelty Free Internationals an internationally-recognized certification for cosmetics, personal care and household product brands which are not tested on animals. COVERGIRL products have not been tested on animals, either by us or our suppliers—it’s the toughest standard in the world. To get certified, we underwent a rigorous independent audit of our global supply chain from start to finish, ensuring that ALL of our products are free from animal testing.”

It’s worth noting that Covergirl is owned by Coty who does tests on animals. If you’re not comfortable with this, then it’s probably best to stay away. But, with their Leaping Bunny certification, Coty’s presence does not affect their cruelty-free status.

Is Covergirl Vegan?

Covergirl is not fully vegan but their recent collection, Clean Fresh is so it’s our hope that they are transitioning over to be fully vegan. Here is a list of their vegan products:

Is Covergirl Organic?

Covergirl is not organic. The closest you’ll get to that is the Clean Fresh line which is formulated without sulfates, formaldehyde, phthalates, parabens, or talc. It’s also vegan. This was a great launch for Covergirl and unheard of for drugstore brands. Some organic brands include Kosas, Burts Bees and Ilia to get an idea of just how much work it is to be organic.

Where is Covergirl Made?

Covergirl claims their products are ‘globally made.’ Definitely a loaded answer but they do manufacture some products in the US!

Is Covergirl Sold in China?

No, Covergirl is not sold in Mainland China! They are cruelty-free and don’t sell there as animal testing is required by law. Their Leaping Bunny certification means their cruelty-free worldwide! Any brand with a cruelty-free certification is not sold in Mainland China.

Is Covergirl Paraben-Free?

Covergirl is not fully paraben-free. Their Clean Fresh line is paraben-free. Hopefully the rest of their products to come in the future follow suit! Parabens are commonly used as preservatives to help products last longer. To check if a product has parabens, keep an eye out for: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isopropylparaben and isobutylparaben. Basically anything with -paraben in the name but these are some common ones.

Parabens are linked to endocrine disruption, similar to phthalates and are approved by the FDA in small amounts. They’re very polarizing in beauty products and more and more brands are cutting them out of their products.

Is Covergirl Gluten-Free?

Covergirl has some gluten free products. All the gluten-free products will state so on the label. Skinsafeproducts.com allows you to check for any ingredients in your product.

Is Covergirl Phthalates-free?

The Clean Fresh line is phthalates-free! The rest of their products are a mix so keep an eye out for the ingredients phthalate, DEP, DBP, DEHP and fragrance. Those indicate phthalates and they’re used to improve the texture and finish of products. In makeup, they’re most commonly found in eye products like eyeliner and mascara.

Is Covergirl Non-comedogenic?

Covergirl’s only non-comedogenic product is the Covergirl Clean Liquid Makeup Foundation. This means it’s formulated not to clog your pores. Hopefully they create more non-comedogenic, complexion products in the future! But just because their other foundations aren’t non-comedogenic doesn’t mean they’ll clog your pores.

Is Covergirl PETA Cruelty-Free Approved?

Covergirl is not PETA approved but they have a Leaping Bunny Cruelty-Free certification. Leaping Bunny is the biggest and most recognized international company for cruelty-free brands. It works in place of a PETA certification and is totally trustworthy at naming cruelty-free brands.

Where to Buy Covergirl?

Covergirl is available at most CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Target, Ulta, and Amazon.

Final Thoughts

It’s so great that Covergirl finally made the push to get their cruelty-free certification from Leaping Bunny! It means so much more when brands get certifications versus just outright saying they’re cruelty-free. The next step for Covergirl should be transitioning the rest of their line to being vegan. They killed it with their Clean Fresh line and that was one of the first clean lines of makeup from a drugstore brand.

Covergirl needs to give a lot of attention to their shade ranges. What they’re done with becoming cruelty-free is great but, their shade ranges are abysmal and don’t fit even half of the population. If Covergirl steps up their shade ranges and switches to vegan formulations, no doubt they will be one of the best brands at the drugstore!
