The Ordinary’s Rose Hip Seed oil is an organic and cold-pressed formula. The only ingredient is 100% rosehip seed oil and it’s wild how good rosehip oil is for the skin. The high contents of Vitamin A (retinol) present gives it anti-aging and regenerative properties. It can fade dark spots, hyper-pigmentation and even heal inflamed skin. We can’t forget, this oil adds great hydration to the skin but it is so much more than just a moisturizer.

Rosehip seed oil is not non-comedogenic but has a very low comedogenic rating so all skin types should be able to use this oil. This formulation by The Ordinary is a little bit of a heavier formula that remains on the skin. It does not absorb very quickly and it leaves a tacky touch. But, I would not describe it as greasy. My dry skin really soaks up this oil but I could see how someone with oily skin may not like it or need something this hydrating.

Rosehip oil is ideally used in the PM. Why? The high concentration of Vitamin A makes it better suited for nighttime use. There are no conflicts from The Ordinary as to what you can use and pair it with. It is best to use it after water-based serums, near the end of your skincare routine, followed up with a moisturizer for effective hydration.

Rosehip oil does not have a strong scent unless it starts to spoil. Some reviews complain about a funky, even rancid scent which is due to the high fatty acid content. This does not mean it’s bad, though if you think it is, trust your gut and return it. It’s recommended to store the rosehip oil in a skincare fridge if you have one. It does come in UV protective packaging to help boost the shelf life.

The Ordinary Rose Hip Seed Oil Pros

  • This rosehip oil is very affordable and such a versatile ingredient.
  • UV packaging helps to extend the shelf life. It is recommended to store this in a skincare fridge if you have one.
  • Rosehip oil has regenerative and healing properties. As well as a high concentration of Vitamin A which makes it great for anti-aging.
  • Organic, cold-pressed formula.
  • The Ordinary advises this oil to be good for all skin types. I think dry and sensitive skin types would favor this oil.
  • Supports healthier skin and a dull complexion.
  • Ideally used in your PM routine without conflicts. Just use after water-based serums so it layers well.
  • Vegan and cruelty-free formula.
  • While not non-comedogenic, rosehip oil does have a low comedogenic score meaning many can use and benefit from it.
  • Gives a ‘glass skin’ glow.
  • Can brighten and fade hyperpigmentation while soothing and healing the skin. If your skin is sensitive to acids, this is a great product to use.
  • Receives very complimentary reviews.
  • Easy dropper applicator and UV protected, recyclable glass packaging.
  • The formula is fragrance-free but has a mild, floral, or herb smell.
  • Works for inflamed and irritated skin.

The Ordinary Rose Hip Seed Oil Cons

  • The smell can be a little off as this oil is high in fatty acids. This does not mean your oil has gone bad. But, if you don’t think it’s right, definitely return it for a new batch you feel comfortable using.
  • This is advised for all skin types but it lingers and stays tacky on the skin. You may not like that if you have oily or acne-prone skin.
  • Some people may experience irritation. The Ordinary always recommends patch testing their products before using them.
  • This oil can go bad quickly so use it up while you have it.

How to use it

This oil is best used in your PM routine after water-based serums. Why can’t it be used in the morning? Rosehip oil has a high concentration of Vitamin A (retinol) which can make your skin more sensitive to this sun. You should always be wearing SPF but especially when using this oil or using acids. That’s why it’s best used at night but other than that, it has no conflicts as to what you can or can’t pair it with.

Final Thoughts

The Ordinary’s Rose Hip oil is a very affordable formula with a lot to offer. The high concentration of Vitamin A makes it great for anti-aging as well as fading dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It also works to soothe inflamed, dehydrated skin. This oil is very versatile and for those with skin too sensitive to use acids, this is a great alternative. It’s advised for all skin types but I do feel like dry, sensitive skin will favor it as it’s a little bit of a heavier oil.

Another win by The Ordinary and a great staple to keep in your routine!
